Preserving the Oriental organ, Knight Foundation

Premiere of the street performance of the adaptation of the ingenuity “The Lady of the Sea”, made with the support of the Knight Foundation. It was presented during the 2nd Annual International Theatre Festival dedicated to women: Cassandra. The original performance was performed using the Oriental organ, a musical instrument currently in disuse and unknown by the new generations.

Ten years ago, Knight Arts Challenge was established to allow the residents of Miami to bring their artistic ideas to life. This year (2018), 43 winners from all over South Florida will help make art in Miami look, sit and be heard throughout the city and in many neighborhoods. Our company The Ingenuity Theatre was one of the winners with the project “rescuing the Oriental organ”. The project consists of the rescue of this street musical instrument used in popular dances in Cuba, currently in disuse and unknown by the new generations. However, there are many of his unique musical contributions and the richness of his legacy. For this we created a special musical score with Eugenio Cuayo, Cuban immigrant belonging to a lineage of organ builders, who elaborate the first Oriental organ of the city of Miami with wood of useless furniture and other materials. This musical score will be used in a street theater montage inspired by Ibsen’s text: “The Lady of the Sea.” We have chosen this text and that our city is anchored in the sea and made up of young immigrants among others and it is to them that this project is directed.
